Reading GPS data from SIM908 module

This post is intended to help beginners to read GPS data from SIM908 GSM/GPRS modem. The modem has GPS functionality to notify user’s location by receiving signals from satellites.

Step1: Connect the modem to the computer and open the port. Wait for the modem to be ready.

Step2: Check whether the modem works ok. Type “AT” (With no quotation marks) and press enter key. It will return “OK.

Step3: Check whether the GPS power supply is OFF/ON
Type: “AT+CGPSPWR?” (With no quotation marks) and press enter key. If „0‟ power supply is OFF and if „1‟ power supply is ON

Step4: Turn ON the GPS power supply. If the supply is OFF turn ON the power supply by typing “AT+CGPSPWR=1” (With no quotation marks). The modem will return “OK”

Step5: Reset the GPS modem at the beginning. Type “AT+CGPSRST=0” (The GPS data can be seen using the GPS debug PORT.)

Additional steps: We can select the output format as we need. For that type
“AT+CGPSOUT=<n>” (without quotation marks). And the output will be as per
the input „n‟.

For n = 0: The debug UART is disabled.
For n = 2: enable $GPGGA data output
For n = 4: enable $GPGLL data output For n = 8: enable $GPGSA data output
For n = 16: enable $GPGSV data output
For n = 32: enable $GPRMC data output
For n = 64: enable $GPVTG data output
For n = 255: enable $GPZDA data output
